Background of the Study
Trade liberalization refers to the reduction of government restrictions on international trade, which has become a central economic policy for many countries, including Nigeria. The policy aims to create a more open and competitive environment by lowering tariffs and quotas, thus encouraging foreign trade and investment (Olufemi & Yakubu, 2024). In Nigeria, the implementation of trade liberalization policies has sparked both positive and negative responses, particularly in local economies. Tudun Wada Local Government, located within Kano State, is home to many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that rely on local markets for their products. The liberalization of trade policies, aimed at boosting the economy through enhanced international trade, has had mixed effects on these businesses. On one hand, businesses have benefited from easier access to global markets; on the other, they have faced stiff competition from imported goods, often leading to a decline in local production. This study seeks to assess the impact of these trade liberalization policies on local businesses, focusing on their survival and growth in Tudun Wada Local Government.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Trade liberalization policies have led to an influx of imported goods in Nigeria, which has presented challenges for local businesses in Tudun Wada Local Government. These businesses face difficulties in competing with cheaper imported products, impacting their profitability and growth. While trade liberalization policies aim to benefit the economy by promoting competition, local businesses in Tudun Wada have experienced adverse effects such as increased competition, reduced market share, and higher operating costs (Aliyu & Jibril, 2023). This study will investigate the extent to which trade liberalization policies have affected local businesses in the area and identify the challenges that hinder their ability to thrive in a liberalized economy.
